High School Drama Film - Sound Design

Sound Design

My group has decided that we should create an original soundtrack as with it being original it would be more authentic. Rather, than using the music program GarageBand, we decided to use another music program Logic Pro 9 as it is more sophisticated and there is more that can be done to the track.

 These are a few screenshots that were taken of me working on Logic, all the instruments that were used was from sample instruments that were already in Logic. GarageBand is a music program for beginners which is tailor made for those who are new to working with a music program hence the reason it's very easy to use.


With Logic, one can be more versatile as there is a lot more to play around with such as the plugins which can let you change the sound into a completely different sound making it seem almost like it's an original sound.


The image above is a screenshot of one of these plugins which I used. This is known as Sculpture synth which can be used to create a synth sound but in form of a plucked instrument sound. There is much to play with such as delay which you can use to make the sound come in later. It can also be used to alter the very sound you have to something you have never heard with the oscilators which is located in the top left hand corner. And there is a lot more as well.

Nearly all of the track is original and has been played in by the music producer except two samples which consist of a sample of scary footsteps. 

 Since the footsteps are slow it gives a scary feeling which matches the way the teacher would act in the film, being very rude and mean. This also means that the actor playing the role of the character would have to walk according to the soundtrack so it can be synced up correctly.

Another form of diegetic sound that would be used is the sound of a school bell ringing, which immediately tells the people listening to it that they are watching a film about High School.


Here are two short soundtracks I created at the beginning, which was created by me playing around hence the reason they are only a few seconds and can't be longer.

Pitch feedback

(Create questionnaire completed by the set target audience. Also include the teacher's feedback on Promoniter to achieve higher marks.)

Evaluate the clips on what you have learned from the teacher and peer feedback. Talk about what you are going to change? What was good about your film pitch? What can you add? What will we keep the same? What would we do differently next time? What are we going to work on most? When will editing take place?



Teacher's feedback on the pitch for our film. 

From the feedback that we received from our teacher and peers, we have learnt that we need to be more thorough about our initial idea of a voice over. We have decided that it would be much better to cast the voice of the narrator as the loner rather than having an omniscient narrator. This will a mean that he will be able to give is own point of view on the stereotypical characters that are often portrayed in mainstream high school films and compare this to his own experiences of high school.

We are using still image of the different characters to emphasise their stereotype. For instance, the bully will enter the scene by tripping up the new kid and there would then be a still of this images to signify the the stereotype that this character is playing out. Also, the fact that the new is wearing brand new clothes will further help to send out the message that he is in all aspects 'new' to the codes and conventions that are followed through in high school.

It is key that we plan the other characters are wearing clothes that mirror their role. For example, we gained inspiration for what the loner was going to wear by looking at the American Beauty guy' from Not Another Teen Movie.

High School Drama - Blog 22

High School Drama

Plot - New kid tries to be friends with other types of stereotypes however the friend prevents them from making any as he/she may consider them as a bad influence. It is not only a matter of the new kid trying to be friends with other students but also trying to inform the superintendent that not everything is alright. Teacher and Bully are allies who prevent the New Kid and any other student from trying to ruin them.


Characters

Bully - Enters through kicking/girl

New Kid - Scared, Worrisome

Drama Queen - Boy/Girl, Overeacts

Loner - Always alone, doesn't want to be involved in anything

Nerd/s-Always answering everything, too into books

Bystander - Doesn't want to be involved but doesn't want to be picked on so they take sides for their own sake

Teacher - In league with the Bully, partners, doesn't care about the other students. With Bully in charge of school.

Superintendent - Investigates, making sure everything is normal

Reflection blog - 21


Reflection Blog

I do believe I have improved my blogging since the start of the course. Initially, I struggled to keep up to date with the work. However, I have progressed in terms of my marks and grades. There are one or two tasks which are still pending completion, but I will complete it soon. My target by the end of the year is to achieve a grade B/C, and I intend to finish the upcoming blogging tasks and complete the unfinished blogs.

Blog 21: Reflection







Since my last blogging health check, I believe that I have improved in completing blogging tasks. A the start of the course, I struggled to keep up with all the work that was expected of me to complete at home and in class. However, I have made sure to complete the extension tasks so that I receive a higher grade on my next blogging health checklist. I think that since the last blogging health check, my mark has risen from 11 to 14. However, I want to keep on improving so that my mark reaches is 17-18.

Reflection Post - Blog 21





I have done quite well in terms of blogging before but now I think I have done more better as I am uploading more posts which are very detailed. They include a plethora of information not just key information such as what is required of the task. Any blogs I may have missed as a result of the involvement of another activity or class, I have kept up with despite this so all blogs are up to date.

I have to work on my knowledge of industry as my marks are not as high as they should be therefore my ambition is to revise more on that particular topic so I would not receive the same result.
